The Moonsea

Dare — and Beware

✦ ✦ ✦

"Dare — and Beware!" A bleak frontier of tyrant cities, ravaging dragons and merciless winters on the shores of a cold, perilous sea.

A Cruel Frontier

The Moonsea is a grim region of North Faerûn, dominated by the great sea that gives it its name and linked to the Sea of Fallen Stars by the River Lis. Its shores form a wild frontier with no central capital, scattered with city-states ruled by despots. The land is infamous for harsh winters, mineral wealth, marauding dragons and pirates. It serves as a buffer between the gentler lands to the south and the monster-haunted wastes of Thar and the Ride to the north, where giants, ogres and dragons dwell.

Cities here rise swiftly on nerve and ambition, only to fall in war or raid and be rebuilt again. Only the strongest and most ruthless prosper. The folk of the Moonsea are accustomed to cruel lords and regard outsiders — and one another — with deep suspicion; in turn, the rest of Faerûn views them as sullen, crafty and dangerous.

The Cities of the Sea

The most powerful city-states crowd the sea's shores. Zhentil Keep, at the western end, long served as the chief base of the far-reaching Zhentarim. Hillsfar lies to the southwest, Mulmaster to the southeast — a cesspool of crime, intrigue and Bane-worship — and Melvaunt rises on the northern shore, its forges clouding the sky over docks rife with slave-trade. Lesser cities such as Phlan, Thentia and Elventree cling to a more independent, chaotic spirit. Ruins abound, the most haunting being sunken Northkeep, whose drowned bells still toll on foggy nights.
