Port City · Independent · Founded by a Priestess of Wee Jas
About a week's travel to the north of Cauldron is the port city of Sasserine. It is slightly larger than Cauldron. A number of the noble families of Cauldron have branches in Sasserine.
Sasserine was founded several centuries before Cauldron by a priestess of Wee Jas who led her people away from the doomed Suloise empire almost a decade before the Rain of Colourless Fire brought it to ruin. After its founding it remained a small port for trading with the kingdoms to the north. It prospered once Cauldron was founded and wealth started to flow from deep in the jungle.
It was conquered by pirates from the hold of the Sea Princes almost a century ago. The Sea Princes kept its location secret so they could benefit from the exotic goods and slaves they gained through this port city. The Sea Princes never extended their direct rule to Cauldron but by dominating Cauldron's only major trading partner they dominated Cauldron. This led to Port Shaw flourishing as Cauldron sought alternate trade routes.
About ten years ago the Sea Prince rulers were slain by the Scarlet Brotherhood and a puppet government put in place. This puppet government couldn't afford to enforce rulership over Sasserine and so the Sea Prince governors fled, or were killed. The Scarlet Brotherhood's ominous red sailed ships visited Sasserine, took goods and slaves but departed without seeking to rule the city.
The Sea Princes have since rebelled against the reign of the Scarlet Brotherhood and the Hold has been in turmoil for many years. For the last ten years Sasserine has gained its independence and strengthened its defences.
In the region around Sasserine are numerous plantations. They are largely farmed by indentured labour. This form of slavery is legal in Sasserine. A captured native is freed after 5 years. The most common punishment is to be sold as a slave for a number of years. Anyone sentenced to 5 or more years as a slave can be sold as a slave outside of Sasserine. Slavery in the hold of the Sea Princes and the Scarlet Brotherhood are not so enlightened.
